Solie Says
Dear Solie,
I've been spending a lot of time in my valley lately, and I've spotted some of the most adorable critters. The problem is, every time I get close enough to say hello, they bolt. I just want to be friends and share a snack, but I feel like I'm playing a high-stakes game of tag that I'm definitely losing.
How do I bond with a shy critter who keeps running away?
~Out of Breath in the Valley
Dear Out of Breath,
I feel your pain! It's hard to be a social butterfly when the neighbors think you're a hawk. Here's how to go from 'scary giant' to 'best friend':
- Play hard to get: Sit still and ignore them. Reading a book makes you look like a harmless rock rather than a predator.
- The snack trail: Don't hand-feed yet. Leave a treat - like an apple slice - and step back. Let them learn that you equal deliciousness.
- Shrink down: Get low to the ground. If you're sitting, you aren't nearly as scary to a tiny critter.
Pro Tip: Avoid direct eye contact at first. In the wild, a stare-down is a challenge, not a greeting!
Be patient and let their curiosity do the work. You'll the talk of the valley soon!
Love,
Solie
